Off We Go
Our Cotswolds Way Adventure
Tomorrow we’re heading to England for a trip we’ve been looking forward to for a long time: eleven days walking through the Cotswolds, followed by a few days exploring Bath, Oxford, and London.
We fly out of Boston on September 3 and arrive in London the following morning. We then make our way to Chipping Campden, a small town at the northern end of the Cotswold Way. We’ll have a night there to settle in before setting off on foot the next morning, September 5th, which also happens to be our 16th anniversary.
From there, we’ll spend eleven days working our way south toward Bath:
- Day 1: Chipping Campden → Stanton — 10.5 miles
- Day 2: Stanton → Winchcombe — 7.5 miles
- Day 3: Winchcombe → Dowdeswell — 11 miles
- Day 4: Dowdeswell → Birdlip — 10 miles
- Day 5: Birdlip → Painswick — 7 miles
- Day 6: Painswick → Stonehouse — 8 miles
- Day 7: Stonehouse → Dursley — 9 miles
- Day 8: Dursley → Wotton-under-Edge — 7 miles
- Day 9: Wotton-under-Edge → Old Sodbury — 13 miles
- Day 10: Old Sodbury → Pennsylvania, near Cold Ashton — 8 miles
- Day 11: Cold Ashton → Bath — 10.5 miles
That adds up to about 101.5 miles of walking through rolling countryside, villages, farmland, woods, and plenty of woolies along the way. Our longest day will be the 13-mile stretch to Old Sodbury, and on September 15 we’ll walk the final stretch into Bath.
Once we arrive, we’re giving our feet a well-earned break and spending three nights retrenching to Bath. (Any Persuasion fans out there?) We’ll have time to explore the city, visit the Thermae Bath Spa, watch our favorite play, Tristan and Yseult, and catch some of the Jane Austen Festival, which happens to be taking place while we’re there.
From Bath we’ll make our way to Oxford and spend a night there before heading back to London. We’ll finish with three nights in Notting Hill, including a cooking class and a couple of days to wander around the city before flying home on September 22.
So: 20 days, four cities, eleven days on foot, and just over 100 miles of the Cotswold Way - here we come!
We’ll post updates here of our tales as we go - assuming, of course, that at the end of each day we still have enough energy left to write them. Until then, please enjoy the picture above of the infamous Cotswold sheep.
